Student Assistant, Deforestation
OVERVIEW
PRINCIPAL ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Student Assistant will support the Information & Knowledge team in managing data for deforestation monitoring and will be focused on utilizing the learnings in their academic or future experience
The exact function performed by the Student Assistant will include learning QGIS tool, doing quality checks for data submissions for deforestation, managing the database and working on creating some basis insights, analysis as need be, supporting or extracting data for different dashboards. This will drive the support on deforestation monitoring of the producers. Depending on different digital developments some data flows may change where the person may require supporting in training and support or responding to some basic queries for colleagues. We hope for this to be a learning experience for the individual and can be useful for their academic or future experience.
SKILLS REQUIRED
Level of education:
Must be a currently enrolled student in a Bachelor/Master’s degree program focused on environment, development studies, sociology, development economics, agriculture, agronomics, business administration, information technology or related field. The Student Assistant should also be enrolled in a German university.
Job Specific Competencies and personal qualities:
- Advanced user of Microsoft Excel.
- Good numerical and statistical skills.
- Good knowledge of data analytics tools like Power Query in Excel or software like R can be beneficial.
- Any prior experience in data cleansing, quality checks and preparation of data sets.
- Experience with variety of survey tools like Kobo toolbox, Survey JS, Lime Survey etc. or inclination to learn.
- Basic project management experience.
- Knowledge of GIS skills or willingness to learn QGIS.
- Excellent analytical stills and the ability to distil key messages from academic publications, technical reports, case studies, or other datasets or information packages.
- Attention to detail.
- Experience in working with stakeholders from different cultures, countries, and backgrounds.
- Excellent English language skills (Working knowledge of additional languages in which material on Fairtrade are published).

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
- This is a 6 months position with possibility of an extension (depending on budget availability) to 12 months.
- Weekly working hours: 20 hours
- Location is at Fairtrade International offices in Bonn, Germany.
- The office language is English.
- Salary as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement for the Wholesale and Foreign Trade Industries for North Rhine Westphalia and Fairtrade International Company Agreement on wages and salaries Group II.
- Starting date: As soon as possible
